25 Simple Ways to Improve First Impressions

First impressions are formed within seconds of a buyer arriving at your property. These twenty-five improvements are practical, low-cost, and proven to make a real difference to how buyers perceive your home.

Kerb Appeal (1–8)

The exterior of your property is the first thing buyers see — in photographs and in person:

  • 1. Clean the front door — repaint or replace if it is tired or dated
  • 2. Clean or replace door furniture — letterbox, knocker, and house number
  • 3. Pressure wash the driveway, path, and patio
  • 4. Mow the front lawn and trim edges
  • 5. Clear gutters and clean fascias if visible
  • 6. Remove weeds from paths, drives, and borders
  • 7. Add a potted plant or window box to the entrance
  • 8. Ensure the property number is clearly visible from the street

Hallway and Entrance (9–13)

The hallway sets the tone for the entire viewing:

  • 9. Declutter the hallway completely — remove coats, shoes, bags, and post
  • 10. Clean or replace the doormat
  • 11. Ensure the hallway is well lit — replace any dead bulbs
  • 12. Add a mirror to make the space feel larger and lighter
  • 13. Ensure the hallway smells fresh — avoid strong air fresheners

Kitchen (14–17)

The kitchen is often the most scrutinised room in a property:

  • 14. Clear all worktops completely — store appliances out of sight
  • 15. Clean the oven, hob, and extractor thoroughly
  • 16. Replace any tired or mismatched cabinet handles
  • 17. Ensure all taps are clean and free of limescale

Living Spaces (18–21)

Living rooms and reception rooms need to feel spacious and welcoming:

  • 18. Remove excess furniture — less is more in property photography and viewings
  • 19. Clean windows inside and out to maximise light
  • 20. Ensure all light fittings work and use warm, bright bulbs
  • 21. Add fresh flowers or a plant to the main reception room

Bathrooms and Bedrooms (22–25)

Bathrooms and bedrooms are where buyers imagine their daily lives:

  • 22. Re-grout or clean grout in bathrooms — discoloured grout is a common buyer concern
  • 23. Replace shower curtains if they are stained or mouldy
  • 24. Make all beds with fresh, neutral linen
  • 25. Remove personal photographs and family items from all rooms
