Change of Address Checklist
Change of Address Checklist
Updating your address with every organisation that holds your details is one of the most time-consuming parts of moving home. This checklist helps you work through it systematically — so nothing important gets missed.
Government and Official Bodies
Update your address with government and official bodies as a priority — some have legal implications if not updated promptly:
- Electoral roll — update at gov.uk/register-to-vote
- HMRC — update via your Personal Tax Account at gov.uk
- DVLA — update your driving licence at gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence
- DVLA — update your vehicle registration (V5C logbook) at gov.uk
- Passport — not legally required immediately, but update when you next renew
- DWP — if you receive any benefits or state pension
- Local council — for council tax, benefits, and any local authority services
- NHS — register with a new GP and update your NHS records
Financial
Update your address with all financial institutions — failure to do so can affect credit checks and correspondence:
- All bank and building society accounts
- Credit card providers
- Mortgage lender (if applicable)
- Pension providers — workplace and personal pensions
- Investment accounts and ISAs
- Premium Bonds — update at nsandi.com
- Credit reference agencies — Experian, Equifax, TransUnion
- Accountant or financial adviser
Insurance
Update your address with all insurance providers — your address affects your premiums and policy validity:
- Buildings and contents insurance — cancel old policy, set up new one for new property
- Car insurance — your address affects your premium; update immediately
- Life insurance and critical illness cover
- Health insurance
- Pet insurance
- Travel insurance
Work and Professional
Notify your employer and any professional bodies of your new address:
- Employer HR department — for payroll, P60, and correspondence
- Professional membership bodies
- Any professional indemnity or liability insurance
- Companies House — if you are a company director
- HMRC — if you are self-employed (update your Self Assessment records)
Subscriptions and Services
Update your address with subscription services and regular deliveries:
- Royal Mail — set up a mail redirection service to catch anything you miss
- Online shopping accounts — Amazon, eBay, and other retailers
- Magazine and newspaper subscriptions
- Streaming services — Netflix, Spotify, etc. (for billing address)
- Gym membership
- Loyalty cards and reward schemes
- Delivery services — Deliveroo, Just Eat, etc.
Family and Personal
Don't forget to notify family, friends, and personal contacts:
- Children's school — arrange transfer if moving to a new area
- Dentist and optician
- Solicitor and accountant
- Vet — if you have pets
- Friends and family — update your address book
- Any clubs, societies, or organisations you are a member of
What to Do Next
Set up a Royal Mail redirection service before you move — this catches any correspondence sent to your old address while you work through this checklist. Work through each section systematically and tick off each notification as you complete it. Allow several weeks to complete all notifications.
